Mystical Spatula! is the new dense and exotic "solo live recording project" of Portland songwriter John Whipple. Dobro, banjo, clock radio, cheap broken keyboard, melodica, and harmonicas are thrown into a mixer, sampler, and loop pedal and thrown back out at the audience sometimes twisted and upside down. Rather than the infinite repeating of a single phrase like many loop acts, Whipple runs three or more phrases at once and is constantly redefining and altering them giving Mystical Spatula! its organic and unpredictable feel. The music of Mystical Spatula! brings summons the ghosts of the 60's psychedelic blues of Pink Floyd, Hendrix, and Zappa and shares some of the flavors of contemporary acts like Panda Bear, Radiohead, Califone, Juana Molina, and Portishead.
